Tucker Carlson Announces the Passing of His Father, Renowned Journalist Dick Carlson
Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson has announced the passing of his father, Richard “Dick” Carlson, a respected journalist, diplomat, and public figure.
He died peacefully surrounded by family, according to a statement released by Tucker.

Dick Carlson was a prominent media figure in the 1980s and 1990s, having served as a reporter, investigative journalist, and later as the director of Voice of America, where he played a key role in shaping U.S. broadcasting during the Cold War. He also served as the U.S. ambassador to the Seychelles and held various leadership roles in public affairs and diplomacy.
“My father was everything to me,” Tucker Carlson said. “He was tough, honest, brilliant, and deeply principled. He lived his life with integrity and left behind a legacy of truth and hard work that I will always admire.”
Throughout his career, Dick Carlson earned praise for his fearless reporting and commitment to public service. Friends and former colleagues remember him as a man with sharp insight, a quick wit, and unwavering professionalism.

Tucker, who followed in his father’s journalistic footsteps before becoming one of the most influential voices in cable news, has often credited his dad for inspiring his career in media.
The Carlson family has asked for privacy during this time and plans to hold a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, they have encouraged donations to causes that promote press freedom and journalistic integrity—values Dick Carlson championed throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
