MAN FINDS A SMASHED PHONE ON THE ROADSIDE — AFTER HE INSERTS THE SIM CARD INTO HIS OWN PHONE AND CALLS “DAUGHTER,” HE RUSHES TO HELP.
This morning was like any other for 30-year-old Alan. He headed to the bakery to get fresh rolls for his mom.
But as he walked down the street, an old, broken phone, battered like it had been run over by a car, caught his eye.
Alan, a programmer with a love for tech, picked it up, thinking he could maybe fix it later. He didn’t think much of it and tucked it in his pocket. After breakfast, he inserted the SIM card into his own phone and, out of curiosity, dialed the only number saved: “Daughter.”
“Mom!” the child’s voice said. “Is that you?”
Alan’s heart skipped a beat. “I’m not your mom,” he said, confused. “Who is this?”
The voice sounded disappointed but then replied, “Where’s Mom?”
Alan, unsure what to do, stuttered, “I don’t know. I found a broken phone, switched the SIM, and called. Who are you?”
The child, a little girl, seemed to get more upset. “My mom went to the store yesterday and didn’t come back.”
Alan’s chest tightened. “What’s your name? Where’s your dad? Or your grandma?”
The child’s voice cracked as she answered, “I’m Julie. I don’t have a dad or a grandma. I only have my mom.”
“Julie, do you know where you live?”
“Independence Street, building seven, apartment 18.”
Alan’s heart pounded. “Julie, can you tell me — are you okay? Is there anyone there with you?”
Julie’s response hit him hard: “I’m alone. My legs don’t work, so I can’t go anywhere.”
The confusion in Alan’s mind deepened. “Wait, Julie, your legs don’t work? How have you been getting around?”

“I use a wheelchair. But there’s no one here to help me,” Julie’s voice trembled.
Alan’s protective instincts kicked in.
“Julie, I need you to listen to me carefully. I’m coming to get you, okay?”
When Alan arrived at little Julie’s address, the door opened, revealing a tiny, frail girl sitting in a wheelchair. She looked up at him with tired, wide eyes, her face full of sadness.
“Will you find my mom?” Julie asked softly with tears in her eyes.
Alan understood that the journey ahead would uncover truths he wasn’t ready to face, but it was too late to turn back now.
Alan knelt down to Julie’s level, trying to offer a reassuring smile though his mind was racing.
“I’ll do everything I can,” he promised. “But first, let’s get you something to eat, okay?”
The apartment was small, quiet, and clearly hadn’t been cared for in a couple of days. A few snack wrappers and empty water bottles were scattered around. Julie had been fending for herself. The fridge was nearly empty. Alan found a loaf of bread and a jar of jam—enough for a quick sandwich.
As Julie ate, she began to open up.
“She said she was going to the store and would be back in ten minutes. That was yesterday morning,” she whispered. “She always comes back…”
Alan gently asked, “Has anything like this happened before?”
Julie shook her head. “Never.”
Alan looked around and noticed a calendar on the wall. Several appointments were circled. One stood out—“April 15: Dr. Ramirez – 9:00 AM.” That was yesterday.
“Julie, do you know where this doctor is?” he asked.
She nodded. “It’s just down the street, at the clinic.”
Alan made a quick decision. He wheeled Julie out of the apartment, locked the door behind them, and headed toward the clinic. When they arrived, the receptionist immediately recognized Julie.
“Oh my God… your mother never came to pick you up from your checkup yesterday. We’ve been trying to call her!”
Alan quickly explained what had happened, and within minutes, the police were called.
It didn’t take long for the pieces to start coming together.
Julie’s mother, Elena, had in fact made it to the store—but security footage showed her being followed out by a man. Later, her purse was found abandoned in an alley. Her phone had likely fallen or been thrown onto the road during the incident.
Alan sat beside Julie in the clinic as the officers put out a missing person alert. He watched as Julie clutched his hand tightly, scared but hopeful.
“Will they find her?” she asked.
“I think they will,” Alan said. “And I’ll be right here with you until they do.”
Hours passed. Alan stayed by Julie’s side, speaking with social workers, answering police questions, and making sure she had what she needed. What had started as a normal morning had turned into something much bigger—and Alan wasn’t about to walk away from it.
Late that evening, a breakthrough came. Police found Elena alive but injured, hidden in an abandoned warehouse outside the city. She had been robbed and assaulted but had managed to escape and hide. She was rushed to the hospital.
When Julie saw her mother again, she burst into tears. Alan, standing in the corner, smiled with quiet relief.
“You found her,” Julie whispered.
“No,” Alan replied softly. “We found her—together.”
What began as a strange discovery on a sidewalk had changed three lives forever. And for the first time in a long while, Julie and her mom weren’t alone.
Alan would make sure of that.
