IN HER LETTER TO SANTA, MY DAUGHTER ASKED FOR “THE SAME HEART-SHAPED EARRINGS DAD GAVE TO MY NANNY”

My husband Jerry and I have an 8-year-old daughter, Ruth. Every Christmas, Ruth writes a letter to Santa and leaves it in the freezer for him to “find.” It’s a family tradition.

This year was no different—until I read her letter. That night, after Ruth fell asleep, I opened it and my heart stopped.

She had drawn a picture of heart-shaped earrings and written: “Dear Santa, please bring me the same heart-shaped earrings Dad gave to my nanny! Thank you!”
I felt like the ground had been ripped out from under me. Was Jerry cheating on me with Gloria, our nanny? My mind raced, piecing together their subtle interactions—Jerry’s smiles, his insistence that Gloria stay late.

I had to know the truth. The next morning, I set up a nanny cam. Everything seemed normal until I saw Jerry come home at midday, hours earlier than expected. My stomach dropped.
I raced home and burst through the door, trembling. “What are you two doing here together?” I demanded, my voice shaking.

Jerry and Gloria froze. Gloria clutched a coffee mug, her face paling, while Jerry stammered, “What are you talking about?“

I pulled out my phone, showing Ruth’s letter. “Explain this!” I demanded. “Why is our daughter asking Santa for the same earrings you gave Gloria?“

Jerry’s eyes widened. He turned to Gloria, who looked just as stunned as he did. “You… you told Ruth about the earrings?“

Gloria gulped. “I— I didn’t think she’d write it in her letter!“

“So it’s true?” I whispered, my voice cracking. “You’re giving gifts to the nanny behind my back?“

Jerry sighed, rubbing his face. “No, no, it’s not what you think, I swear.” He took a deep breath and pulled out his wallet. “Look.“

Inside was a tiny receipt. My hands trembled as I read it:
Heart-Shaped Earrings – 2 Pairs

“Two pairs?” I asked, confused.

Jerry nodded. “I bought one pair for Gloria… because Ruth insisted.“

Gloria finally spoke up. “Mrs. Harper, Ruth wanted to get me a Christmas gift. She saw me admiring a pair of earrings online one day, and she told Jerry about it. He thought it was sweet and helped her buy them for me.“

My head spun. “Then why would Ruth ask Santa for the same ones?“

Jerry chuckled nervously. “Because… I got the same exact pair for you too.“

I blinked. “What?“

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. Inside were the same delicate heart-shaped earrings Ruth had drawn in her letter. “I wanted her to be part of picking your gift this year,” he admitted. “She loved them so much that she decided she wanted a pair too.“

I felt like an idiot. My anger melted away as relief rushed through me.

“So… you’re not cheating?” I asked quietly.

Jerry’s face twisted in disbelief. “Of course not! Honey, I’d never—“

I let out a shaky laugh, wiping a stray tear. “Well… this is awkward.“

Later that night, as Ruth opened her own pair of earrings, she beamed. “Now we all match!” she squealed.

I exchanged a look with Jerry, my heart full. Maybe I needed to trust him a little more.
