I overheard my husband using my college fund to buy a new TV and PlayStation. He was very wrong.

Emma had always wanted to change her career and go back to school. She had been saving money for years and was now ready to make her dream come true. But when her husband Jack betrayed her, she didn’t see it coming. This caused her to make brave decisions and deal with difficult feelings.

My name is Emma, and I have three kids. Every since I got back from maternity leave and had my first baby, my life has been a wild ride. Jack and I were trying to keep everything in balance, but I was mostly at home, trying to keep things together while having dreams of going back to work.

I worked part-time from home for years, doing anything I could to help pay for school and add to our income. My dream was to change jobs and work full-time when the kids were old enough to go to school. It was a small light at the end of a long tunnel that helped me keep going.

While I was cleaning up one night, I heard Jack talking to his friend Adam. I stopped what I was doing because Adam’s loud laughter and the subject of their conversation caught my attention.

“Dude, your wife is really cool!” She told me Emma was going to study again. “WOW!” Adam’s voice was very loud on the phone.

Lisa is married to Adam and is a friend from school. The other day, we met in a grocery store and talked.

When Adam said those words, Jack laughed and brushed them off. My heart felt warm, but when Jack answered, it broke.

“Hey, hold on! I have an old TV and PlayStation, so do you think I’d let her use that money to study? I’ve already paid for them with her money.”

My knees gave out. What the heck did he do?! I was yelling. That money was my savings, my way to a better future for my family. My anger turned into determination very quickly. I made the choice to take charge of the situation.

In the beginning, I hid Jack’s TV and PlayStation in the basement, between old sheets and Christmas lights. He thought they were old anyway, right?

Then I found out about the new TV and PlayStation he had ordered. I took a deep breath, got the order number and other information, and called the store’s customer service number.

“Hi, this is Sarah. Thanks for calling TechWorld. What can I do to help you today?” A happy voice spoke to me.

“Hi, Sarah. She is married to Mr. Jack Evans. I tried to keep my voice steady as I said, “I need to cancel an order my husband just placed.” “He’s on a business trip and asked me to cancel on his behalf.”

“Oh, Mrs. Evans, I’m sorry to hear that. Could you please confirm the order by giving me the order number and your contact information?”

I looked at the email confirmation on Jack’s laptop as I read out the order number. “The order number is 372841.”

Sarah kept typing on her end. “Thanks.” I’ll get your order for you. Okay, I see that your husband bought a TV and a PlayStation. Could you tell me why you want to cancel?”

I tried to keep my story straight as I took a deep breath. “Our plans changed quickly, so we won’t need the things anymore.” I’d also like the refund to be sent to a different account.

The line went silent for a short time. “Okay, Mrs. Evans. We are more than happy to help with that. Could you please give me information about the new account?”

“Yes, please update the refund to go to Emma Evans’ account instead.”

“I get it. Please wait a moment while I make those changes. Sarah’s fingers were moving quickly over the keyboard. “Okay, the information has been changed.” The order has been canceled, and the refund will be sent to the new account within three to five business days.

I felt better and let out a quiet sigh. “Thank you very much, Sarah. Thanks for your help.

“Thank you, Mrs. Evans. Is there anything else I can do today to help you?”

“No, that’s all.” Thanks once more.”

“Have a great day, Mrs. Evans.”

As soon as I hung up the phone, I felt a mix of happiness and worry. I was shocked that I had done it. The refund would soon be in my account, where it would stay safe from Jack’s spending on the spur of the moment.

After a few days, Jack yelled, “WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?” when he got home.

I faked surprise as I looked up from the dinner I was making. “What happened?”

“Are you asking me?” Jack had a very red face. “Where the hell is the TV and PlayStation?!”

“Oh, I sold them.” Do you remember that they were old?” As I spoke, I tried to keep my voice steady. I was nervous inside and couldn’t wait to see how Jack would react. They were still in the basement, so I hadn’t really sold them. I only meant to discipline him.

“Emma, how dare you?” Jack was angry, and his fists were clenching and unclenching all the time.

He then tried to calm down by taking a deep breath. “That’s okay. I still bought new ones.”

“About that,” I began, enjoying the tension. “You should prepare to live without a TV and PlayStation because the new ones aren’t arriving anytime soon.”

Jack’s eyes grew big with surprise. “What?” “Why?”

“I cancelled the order and got my money back,” I said in the most casual way possible.

Jack was very angry, and his face turned red. “You didn’t deserve it!” That was MY stuff!”

“Funny, isn’t it?” I didn’t waste any time firing back. “How you think you have a right to use MY college fund for a TV and a PlayStation.”

He looked shocked and then tried to change his mind. “I was just, I’m…”

“Oh no, stop talking. It makes me sick. All of MY money is safe in MY own account, and I’m still waiting on a scholarship application.

Jack was very angry, but he couldn’t do much. I wasn’t going to back down from what I had done to protect my future. I kept my plans moving forward over the next few weeks. After the kids went to bed, I spent my evenings reading through scholarship applications and getting ready for class.

I got an email one day while Jack was at work. As I opened it, my heart beat fast. It worked out for me! That was the last thing that stopped his plans.

Jack got home late that night, tired from work. I knew I had to tell him. I didn’t do it until the kids were in bed after dinner.

“Jack, I have some news,” I told him, trying not to shake my voice.

He looked up, already being wary. “What is it now?”

“I scored the grant. Next month is the first day of my classes.

His face turned red with anger. “You think you’re so clever, don’t you?”

“No, Jack. I am just taking charge of my life. There is something you don’t get.”

He hit the table hard with his fist. “That’s not funny, Emma! How are we going to handle everything? Who will watch the kids while you run around like a student?”

I calmly replied, “I’ve set everything up.” “I will study during the day while the kids are at school, and I will still be here at night.” We’ll get by just fine.”

Jack’s eyes got dark. “What about money?” What are we going to do to pay for this?”

“I have saved money, and the scholarship pays for most of it.” We’ll be okay.

His voice got softer as he tried to make me feel bad about what I did. “Well, Emma, let’s be real.” “What if something goes wrong?”

I didn’t give up. “Jack, nothing bad will happen. I’ve given this some thought. I must do this for my own good and for our growth.

Things were tense in the weeks before the start of my classes. Jack barely talked to me because he was angry, but it was just below the surface. But I wasn’t going to let it bother me. I worked hard on my schoolwork and took care of our kids to show that I could handle everything.

It was scary on the first day of school. I said goodbye to the kids with a kiss and walked into college feeling both excited and nervous.

There were students of all ages in the lecture halls. Each one had their own trouble and story to tell. Being with them and being a part of something bigger made me feel good.

Jack came in and sat down next to me while I was studying at the kitchen table one night. “Emma, we need to talk.”

I took my eyes off my notes. “What is it?”

He let out a sigh and ran his hand through his hair. “I felt like thinking. I might have been wrong. It’s possible that this is the right thing to do.

I gave them a raised eyebrow. “What brought about this change of heart?”

His words, “I talked to Adam,” were true. “He showed me how important this is to you.” How important we should think it is.”

Because he was honest, I softened. “Jack, I need to do this for our family. For the future.”

He looked truly sorry as he nodded. “I understand. I’m also sorry for what I did. I should have been there for you from the start.”

We talked about our plans and how we could make them work together late into the night. It wouldn’t be easy, but I felt hopeful for the first time in a long time.

Months went by while I balanced school, the kids, and our home. It was hard work that paid off. Jack stepped up and did more to help with the kids and the housework. We worked together again as a team to reach our goal.

One afternoon, after a very hard test, I was packing up my books when my phone rang with a message from Jack. There was a sign that said, “We’re proud of you, Emma!” and a picture of him with the kids, all of them smiling.

When I thought about how far we had come, tears came to my eyes. At times, things were hard, and we did wrong, but in the end, our family came together. It wasn’t just my dream of a better future anymore; it was all of ours.

That, my friends, is how I took charge of my life and made sure no one else’s selfishness meant giving up my dreams. There are times when you have to do terrible things to protect your future. But anything is possible if you work hard, have help, and have some courage.
