President Donald Trump has ignited controversy by sharing an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the pope on his Truth Social account.

The image, which portrays Trump in white papal robes and a golden cross necklace, was posted shortly after the funeral of Pope Francis and just days before the Vatican’s conclave to elect his successor.

The post drew immediate criticism from various quarters. Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York described the image as “brutta figura,” an Italian term meaning an embarrassing misstep, expressing hope that Trump had no involvement in its creation .

The New York State Catholic Conference also condemned the image, stating, “There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President. We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St … ” .

In response to the backlash, President Trump denied creating the image, stating, “I had nothing to do with it. Somebody made up a picture of me dressed like the pope, and they put it out on the internet. That’s not me that did it” . He further commented that the image was meant in jest, adding, “You have to have a little fun, don’t you?” Trump also mentioned that his wife, Melania, thought the image was “cute”
