Newly released police footage is shedding light on the final moments of a former NFL player whose death in custody has sparked ongoing investigation and public concern.
Doug Martin, a former star known for his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders, died after being taken into police custody in Oakland, California. The video, released in March 2026, captures the chaotic sequence of events leading up to his death.
According to authorities, officers responded to a reported break-in at a home in the early morning hours. Around the same time, Martin’s mother called 911, telling dispatchers that her son was experiencing a mental health emergency and had not slept for several days.
Surveillance footage shows Martin entering a neighboring property and breaking into a home before officers arrived. Bodycam video then captures police confronting him inside the residence, where he appeared disoriented and distressed.

Officers attempted to calm him as he resisted commands. After a brief struggle, Martin was restrained and placed in handcuffs. Moments later, he became unresponsive while still at the scene.
Paramedics were called and attempted to revive him, performing CPR before transporting him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Officials have not yet released a definitive cause of death, and the case remains under investigation by multiple agencies, including the district attorney’s office.
The release of the footage has raised new questions about the circumstances surrounding Martin’s death, particularly regarding the handling of individuals experiencing mental health crises.
Martin, a former Pro Bowl running back, was widely respected for his athletic career and contributions to the NFL. His death has left fans and the sports community seeking answers as the investigation continues.
