A small figure stood by the roadside

It was late, and James was driving down an old deserted road, his car slicing through the night as he tried to make it home before midnight. The road was quiet, bordered by dense trees and stretches of dark, empty fields. He hadn’t seen another car for miles, and the only light came from his headlights, piercing through the darkness ahead.

Suddenly, something caught his eye. A small figure stood by the roadside, barely visible under the faint moonlight. He squinted, his heart skipping a beat as he realized it was a little girl, no older than five, standing all alone in the middle of nowhere. She was dressed in a thin, white dress, her hair tangled and wild, as if she’d been out here for a long time. She stared at him, motionless, her gaze unwavering.

Every instinct told him to keep driving — it didn’t make any sense for a child to be out here, alone, in the dead of night. But something about her expression stopped him. Against his better judgment, James slowed his car and pulled over, rolling down his window.

“Are you alright?” he called, trying to keep his voice steady. “Are you lost?”

The little girl didn’t respond. She just stepped closer to the car, holding out a small, crumpled piece of paper. Her eyes were wide and haunting, staring at him with a seriousness that seemed far beyond her years. He hesitated, feeling a chill run down his spine, but he couldn’t just ignore her. He reached out, taking the note from her tiny, trembling hand.

As soon as he took it, the girl backed away, her face expressionless, her eyes fixed on him. He looked down at the note, unfolding it with shaky fingers. The handwriting was shaky, barely legible, as if written in a hurry. His heart pounded as he read the words:

“Help me. He’s watching.”

A cold wave of fear washed over him, and he felt his skin prickling. He looked up, but the girl had disappeared, leaving nothing but an empty road stretching endlessly into the dark. Panic surged through him, and he scrambled to get out of the car, scanning the shadows for any sign of her.

“Hello?” he called, his voice echoing into the silence. “Where did you go?”

But there was no answer. It was as if she had vanished into thin air, leaving him alone with the note clutched tightly in his hand. He looked around, his senses heightened, every shadow suddenly seeming darker, every sound sharper. The feeling of being watched crept over him, sending a shiver down his spine.

He hurried back to his car, slamming the door shut and locking it. His hands shook as he tried to steady his breathing, the note still clutched in his hand. He looked down at it again, the words echoing in his mind. “Help me. He’s watching.”

Who was watching? And where had the little girl gone?

Just as he started the engine, he caught a glimpse of movement in his rearview mirror. His blood ran cold as he saw a figure standing at the edge of the trees, partially hidden in the shadows. It was tall and unnaturally still, watching him with an intensity that made his stomach churn. He couldn’t make out any details, but he knew, instinctively, that whoever — or whatever — it was, it was connected to the little girl.

Without a second thought, James floored the accelerator, speeding down the road as fast as he could, desperate to put as much distance as possible between himself and whatever was lurking in the darkness. He kept glancing in his mirrors, half-expecting to see the figure following him, but the road remained empty.

When he finally reached the nearest town, he pulled into a gas station, his hands still trembling. He stepped out of the car, taking a deep breath to steady himself, trying to shake the feeling that he was still being watched. The note was still in his hand, the words now etched into his mind.

He showed it to the gas station attendant, hoping for some kind of explanation, but the man just looked at him, his face paling. “You… you saw her?” the attendant asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

James nodded, confused and shaken. “Do you know who she is?”

The man swallowed, glancing around as if expecting someone to be listening. “People around here… they say that little girl appears to drivers who come down that road alone. They say she’s looking for someone to help her… but no one knows what happened to her. And no one sticks around long enough to find out.”

James felt a chill settle deep in his bones. “Has anyone ever… tried to help her?”

The attendant shook his head. “A few did. But none of them came back.”

As he drove away from the gas station, James couldn’t shake the feeling that he was leaving something unfinished. He glanced down at the note one last time, the haunting words etched in his mind. He didn’t know who the little girl was, or who was watching her, but he knew one thing for certain — he would never drive down that road again.
