20 Early Warning Signs of Cancer You Should Never Ignore

Cancer is often most treatable in its early stages, but many people overlook the warning signs until the disease has progressed.

While not every symptom means cancer, it’s important to pay attention to changes in your body. Here are 20 early warning signs you should never ignore:

1. Unexplained Weight Loss

Shedding pounds without trying could be an early sign of cancer, especially cancers of the stomach, pancreas, or lungs.

2. Persistent Fatigue

Feeling tired all the time—despite getting enough rest—can signal leukemia or colon cancer.

3. Lumps or Bumps

A new lump or thickening in the breast, testicle, or elsewhere could be an early warning sign.

4. Changes in Skin

Look out for new moles, changes in existing ones, or skin that changes color or texture.

5. Unusual Bleeding

Blood in the urine, stool, or from the vagina (outside of a normal period) should be checked immediately.

6. Persistent Cough or Hoarseness

A cough that lingers for more than 3 weeks or changes in your voice could be linked to lung or throat cancer.

7. Difficulty Swallowing

If swallowing becomes painful or difficult, it could indicate esophageal or throat cancer.

8. Frequent Infections

Recurring infections may be a sign that your immune system is being affected by leukemia.

9. Bloating

Ongoing bloating, especially in women, could be an early sign of ovarian cancer.

10. Chronic Pain

Unexplained, long-lasting pain may indicate cancer in bones, the brain, or other organs.

11. Changes in Bowel or Bladder Habits

Sudden constipation, diarrhea, or changes in urination patterns may be symptoms of colon, bladder, or prostate cancer.

12. Sores That Don’t Heal

A sore that doesn’t go away after a few weeks may be a sign of skin or oral cancer.

13. Unexplained Fever

A persistent low-grade fever without an infection can signal blood cancers like leukemia or lymphoma.

14. Night Sweats

Waking up soaked in sweat—unrelated to room temperature—can be an early symptom of some cancers.

15. Unusual Discharge

Foul-smelling or unusual discharge from any part of the body should be evaluated by a doctor.

16. Breast Changes

Beyond lumps, changes like dimpling, nipple inversion, or redness can also signal breast cancer.

17. Persistent Heartburn or Indigestion

Ongoing digestive issues may point to stomach, throat, or pancreatic cancer.

18. White Patches in the Mouth

These can be early signs of oral cancer, especially in tobacco users.

19. Swollen Lymph Nodes

Lymph nodes that are enlarged and stay that way should be checked, especially if they’re not painful.

20. Unexplained Bruising

Frequent bruising, especially in odd places, might be a sign of leukemia or other blood cancers.

When to See a Doctor

While many of these symptoms can be caused by non-cancerous conditions, it’s always best to err on the side of caution. Early detection can save lives, so speak to your healthcare provider if you experience any of these signs.

Your body knows when something’s not right. Don’t ignore it.
