Story: WHAT I DISCOVERED THAT AFTERNOON IN MY OWN HOME NEARLY DESTROYED MY FAMILY.

I PRETENDED TO BE SICK TO SKIP SCHOOL—BUT WHAT I DISCOVERED THAT AFTERNOON IN MY OWN HOME NEARLY DESTROYED MY FAMILY.

My name is Lucía, and I was twelve when a simple lie changed everything.

That morning I told my mother, Marina, that I felt too sick to go to school. She worked long shifts at a clothing store in the city mall, so after leaving me some soup and kissing my forehead, she hurried out the door.

The moment her footsteps disappeared down the stairs, I jumped out of bed and turned on the TV.

I had only skipped school to avoid a math test.

Around noon, I fell asleep on the couch.

I woke up suddenly to the sound of a key turning in the front door.

My heart jumped.

It wasn’t my mom.

It was my aunt Daniela.

But she didn’t act like herself at all. Usually loud and cheerful, she now moved through the apartment quietly, dressed in black, constantly glancing around.

She looked toward the living room. Seeing me wrapped in a blanket, she must have thought I was asleep.

From her purse she pulled out a small velvet bundle.

Then she walked to the coat rack and slipped it into the pocket of my mother’s beige coat.

After that, she made a phone call.

“It’s done,” she whispered coldly. “Call the police tonight. My sister will never realize what happened.”

Then she left.

I waited until the door closed before running to the coat.

Inside the pocket was the velvet bundle.

When I opened it, my hands started shaking.

Diamonds.

For two days the news had been talking about a million-dollar robbery at Aurora Jewelry—the same mall where my mom worked.

My aunt had just planted the stolen diamonds in my mother’s coat.

And that meant something terrifying.

That night, the police would come for my mother.

But Daniela had made one mistake.

She didn’t know there was a security camera above the front door.

And that camera had recorded everything she had just done.

My heart was pounding as I stared at the diamonds in my hands.

For a moment, fear froze me.

If the police came and found them in Mom’s coat, they would believe she stole them from the jewelry store where she worked.

But then I remembered the small security camera above the door.

Mom had installed it after someone tried to break into our apartment the year before.

My hands were shaking as I grabbed her tablet and opened the camera app.

The footage loaded.

There it was.

My aunt Daniela unlocking the door.

Daniela looking around.

Daniela slipping the velvet bundle into Mom’s coat.

And Daniela whispering on the phone.

“It’s done.”

Relief washed over me so suddenly I almost cried.

I copied the video onto a flash drive and waited for my mom to come home.

At 6:45 that evening, the door opened and Mom walked in looking tired.

Before she could even set down her purse, there was a loud knock.

Two police officers stood outside.

“We need to speak with you about the robbery at Aurora Jewelry,” one of them said.

Mom’s face went pale.

They stepped inside and quickly noticed the coat on the rack.

One officer reached into the pocket.

The velvet bundle came out.

Mom looked completely shocked.

“I swear I’ve never seen that before,” she said, her voice trembling.

But before they could say another word, I stepped forward.

“I have proof,” I said.

The officers turned toward me.

I handed them the flash drive.

They watched the video in silence.

By the time it finished, the room had gone completely quiet.

One officer slowly looked up.

Then he said something none of us expected.

“Your aunt Daniela… isn’t just framing your mother.”

He paused.

“She’s one of the suspects we’ve been searching for.”
