Stories: Your boyfriend actually left something for you

My boyfriend, Marcus, insisted on a luxury Valentine’s dinner.

I tried to talk him out of it. “We could cook at home,” I said. “Or go somewhere simple.”

But he shook his head. “No way. You deserve something special.”

So we ended up at a fancy downtown restaurant with dim lighting, violin music, and menus without prices. The kind of place where the napkins were folded like origami.

Dinner was amazing—steak, wine, dessert that looked like art. We laughed the whole evening.

Then the check came.

$380.

Marcus glanced at it and casually slid it toward me.

“Just cover half,” he said.

I stared at him. “You insisted on this place.”

He shrugged. “It’s fair.”

Something about his tone rubbed me the wrong way.

“I’m not paying half,” I said calmly.

For a moment we just looked at each other across the table.

Then Marcus sighed, pulled out his card, paid the whole bill without another word, stood up, and walked out.

Just like that.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

I sat there feeling embarrassed and angry, wondering if I’d just ruined our relationship.

A few minutes later the waitress approached quietly.

“I’m sorry,” she said softly. “I can’t keep quiet. Your boyfriend actually left something for you.”

She handed me a small folded note.

My heart dropped as I opened it.

It read:

“I came here tonight with a question I planned to ask you. But before I could, I needed to know something important.

I needed to know if you’d stay honest with me—even in an awkward moment.

You did.

Check under your chair.”

Confused, I looked down.

Taped beneath the seat was a small velvet box.

My hands started shaking.

Inside was a ring.

Just then, Marcus appeared beside the table again, looking just as nervous as I felt.

“I’m sorry for the drama,” he said. “But I wanted to see if you’d speak your mind instead of just going along with things.”

I stared at him, half laughing, half crying.

“That was evil,” I said.

“Maybe a little,” he admitted.

Then he knelt down beside the table.

“Will you marry me?”

The entire restaurant had gone quiet.

And despite everything… I smiled.

“Yes,” I said.

The room erupted into applause.

And suddenly that $380 dinner didn’t seem so outrageous after all. 💍
