Tragic Climbing Accident in Washington’s North Cascades Claims Three Lives; One Survivor Makes Harrowing Escape
On May 11, 2025, a devastating climbing accident occurred near North Early Winters Spire in Washington’s North Cascades, resulting in the deaths of three climbers and leaving a fourth with serious injuries.
The group was descending a steep gully when their shared anchor point failed, causing a 400-foot fall.
The deceased have been identified as Vishnu Irigireddy, 48; Tim Nguyen, 63; and Oleksander Martynenko, 36. The sole survivor, 38-year-old Anton Tselykh, sustained internal bleeding and a traumatic brain injury. Remarkably, Tselykh managed to extricate himself, hike back to his vehicle, and drive to a payphone in Newhalem to call for help.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the remote and rugged terrain. The Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team assisted in recovering the bodies. Preliminary investigations suggest that the anchor, possibly an old piton left by previous climbers, failed during the descent.
This incident underscores the inherent risks of mountaineering and the importance of equipment inspection and safety measures. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the anchor failure.
