MY MOTHER-IN-LAW FAKED A CALL TO AVOID DINNER—BUT SHE MADE A BIG MISTAKE

I always knew my mother-in-law, Denise, didn’t like me. She wasn’t outright cruel, but she had this way of making me feel… temporary.

Like I was just a phase in her son’s life.
So when my husband, Julian, invited her over for dinner, I wasn’t surprised when she suddenly got a “work call” right before we started eating.
“Oh, I’m so sorry,” she sighed dramatically, holding up her phone. “It’s my manager—I have to take this.”

Julian looked disappointed, but he nodded. “Of course, Mom.”

She stepped away from the table, pressing the phone to her ear. “Yes, I understand. No, that’s totally fine. I can leave now if you need me to.” She glanced at us with a fake grimace, like she was so sorry to be ditching us.

I wasn’t buying it.
She tapped the screen to hang up and lowered the phone. That’s when I saw it.

She tapped the screen to hang up and lowered the phone.

That’s when I saw it.

No call screen. No timer running. No missed call notifications.

Instead, her camera was open.

Busted in Real-Time

It took me a second to process what I had just seen.

She didn’t fake a phone call. She had been watching herself on the front camera to make her lie more believable.

I had to bite my lip to stop myself from laughing.

Denise turned back to us with an exaggerated sigh. “I hate to do this, but I have to go. There’s an issue at work, and they need me ASAP.”

Julian frowned. “Didn’t you say you were off this week?”

She blinked. Too fast.

“Oh—well, yes, but, uh, they’re short-staffed! And, you know, duty calls.”

Julian shrugged. “Okay. I’ll drive you.”

Her eyes widened slightly. “Oh, no, no need! I can get an Uber.”

He shook his head. “It’s late, Mom. I don’t mind.”

Now she looked cornered. Her hands tightened around her purse. “Really, Julian, I insist—”

And that’s when I decided to have some fun.

I casually leaned forward and said, “Before you go, can I see your phone for a sec?”

Denise flinched. “What?”

“I just want to check something. You know, with your ‘call.’”

Julian looked at me, confused. “What’s going on?”

I gave him a sweet smile before turning back to Denise. “I saw your screen, Denise. You weren’t on a call.”

The Dinner She Couldn’t Escape

The silence was glorious.

Denise’s face drained of color. “I—what? That’s ridiculous!”

Julian frowned. “Mom? Did you just fake a call to get out of dinner?”

She let out a nervous laugh. “Don’t be silly! Maybe you saw wrong—”

I pulled out my own phone. “Oh, I got a pretty good look. Want me to show you how your camera was open?”

Her mouth opened and closed like a fish gasping for air.

Julian sighed, shaking his head. “Mom, seriously? Why would you do that?”

Denise looked away, caught. Then she huffed, crossed her arms, and said, “Fine. Maybe I did fake a call. But can you blame me? I didn’t want to sit through a dinner where I’m not welcome.”

Julian’s jaw tightened. “You were welcome. We invited you.”

I folded my arms. “But if you don’t want to be here, at least be honest about it.”

A tense moment passed. Then, with a dramatic sigh, Denise dropped into her chair.

“Fine. I’ll stay. But if the food is bad, I’m leaving.”

Julian chuckled. “Oh, don’t worry. I made sure to add extra salt—just for you.”

I grinned.

That was the last time Denise ever tried to fake her way out of one of our dinners.
