NOT MY SON

I’ve been a doctor for more than ten years and have never seen anything like this.

As a doctor of obstetrics, I work in the maternity ward. Some young people, Lucy and Ross, were there that day. They had prayed for a long time and finally got what they wanted. The birth went well, and they were given two beautiful babies.

But Ross’s smile turned to anger when the nurse gave him the babies.

“This isn’t my son.” “Where is my son?”

Lucy asked, “Dear, what’s going on?” I didn’t want to get involved because I thought it might be a private matter, but when Lucy took the babies, she yelled, “THIS IS NOT MY SON!” “WHERE IS MY SON?”

I stepped in. “Listen, I personally delivered the babies; there can’t be any mistake!”

“Really?” Are you sure we’re crazy? Your nurse might be able to tell you what happened!”

When I looked at our nurse, Savannah, I understood everything.

The clipboard Savannah was holding made her face look pale, and her hands were shaking as she held it. Over the years I’ve known her, I’ve never seen her look so scared. She was usually cool, calm, and very professional, but she looked like a deer caught in headlights right now. As soon as I realized something was wrong, my heart began to beat fast.

“Dr. Avery,” Savannah stuttered, trying not to look at me, “I… I need to talk to you.” In private.”

People in the room were getting more and more tense by the second. Ross and Lucy’s eyes were filled with fear and confusion. Ross said, “No,” his voice shaking with anger that he was barely able to hold in. “Tell us what’s going on now.” “Where is our son?”

Trying to keep things under control, I took a deep breath. “Savannah,” I told her in a firm but kind voice, “you can say anything from here.” They have a right to know what’s going on.

It looked like Savannah was going to cry. At last, she whispered, “I think there was a mix-up in the nursery.” She looked nervously at Ross and Lucy, then back at me.

It made my stomach hurt. “What do you mean, a mix-up?” My voice was barely above a whisper as I asked.

Savannah spoke quickly, as if she were trying to get the words out before she lost the strength to say them. Her eyes were wet with tears. “This morning there were problems in the nursery.” Around the same time, two women gave birth, and the babies were taken to the nursery. However, one of the tags on the babies came off, and we were… sure we had the right babies together. I was sure I did, but…”

Savannah’s speech stopped, and there was a moment of quiet while everyone in the room thought about what she had said. Then Lucy’s voice was so sharp it cut right through the air. She screamed, “You switched our babies!” and held the two babies close to her chest as if she was afraid someone would take them away. “You gave us someone else’s child?!”

Ross was already up and angry, and his face was red. He glared at Savannah and then at me and said, “How could you let this happen?!” “You should act like professionals!” How are you getting our kids mixed up like this?”

A wave of sickness came over me. I had delivered thousands of babies, but this was the first time I had ever seen something like this. It was the worst thing that could happen that something went wrong in the nursery. Just thinking about it made my blood run cold. But I knew I had to keep my cool for the sake of the babies and Ross and Lucy.

“Ross, Lucy,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm, “I know this is upsetting you, but I promise we’ll figure it out right now.” I will make sure that we find out what happened and get you back with your son.”

Ross and Lucy didn’t seem to be sure, but they nodded, showing fear and desperation on their faces. “Then do it,” Ross said, and his voice broke. “Find our son.”

I looked over at Savannah. “I need you to bring every baby that was in the nursery at that time to the examination room,” I stated. “We’re going to test right away.” I also need the birth records for all the babies born today and yesterday.

Savannah wiped her eyes and nodded. She whispered, “Yes, Dr. Avery,” and then quickly left the room.

I went back to Ross and Lucy. I really meant it when I said, “I’m so sorry.” “I have no idea how scary this must be for you.” We will fix this, though, I promise. Just for a little while longer, I need you to trust me.

Now Lucy was crying, and Ross put his arm around her to comfort her, even though it looked like he was having a hard time keeping it together himself. “You better,” he said in a low voice. “Because if you don’t…”

That’s okay, he didn’t have to finish the sentence. It was clear from the way he looked at me.

The next hour seemed like a very long time. As soon as possible, I told them to do DNA tests, and Savannah and the other nurses took all of the babies from the nursery to the exam room. Some people in the maternity ward had already heard about the mistake, and the hospital staff was on edge. It was hard to breathe because I could feel every parent’s anxious and wary eyes on me.

As I was getting ready for the tests, Savannah called me aside. She said, “Dr. Avery,” and her voice was shaking. “I believe I may have discovered something.” I looked at the nursery logs and saw that Mrs. Coleman, one of the mothers, was sent home earlier today. She also had twins.

My heart beat faster. “And we haven’t heard anything from her?”

That was all Savannah could do. “No, but her kids were born around the same time as Lucy’s.” It’s possible…” Even though she didn’t finish, we both knew what it meant.

As soon as I got my phone, I called Mrs. Coleman and prayed that she would answer. She picked up after a few rings.

“Hello?” It was quiet and almost hesitant in her voice.

“Mrs. Coleman, this is Dr. Avery from the hospital,” I said to her. “I’m sorry to bother you, but I have a very important question for you.” Since you got home, have you noticed anything strange about your babies?”

After a long pause, she said, “Actually… yes.” My partner and I just talked about it. We thought one of them looked a little different from the first time we saw him, but we thought it was all in our heads. Why? Is something wrong?”

It broke my heart. “Mrs. Coleman, you need to get back to the hospital right away.” There could have been a mistake, and we need to do some tests to be sure.

It was unbearably tense when Mrs. Coleman showed up with her husband and their twins. Ross and Lucy were holding their breath in the exam room when Mrs. Coleman walked in. Lucy let out a gasp.

As she looked at one of the babies in Mrs. Coleman’s arms, she whispered, “That’s my son.” Her eyes were filled with tears. “I understand. “That’s my son.”

Mrs. Coleman’s eyes got bigger, and she grabbed the babies closer to her. “What’s going on? What’s going on?” Her voice was shaking as she asked.

I quickly told Mrs. Coleman what was going on, and even though she looked shocked, she nodded to show that she understood. “Of course, do whatever you need to do,” she stated.

It took longer than I had hoped for the DNA tests to come back, but they did. I felt both happy and sad as I read them because Savannah gave them to me. When I walked back into the room, both sets of parents were waiting for me with their eyes fixed on me.

“The tests confirm that there was a mix-up,” I stated. “Yes, Ross and Lucy, your son is one of Mrs. Coleman’s twins.” Also, Mrs. Coleman, your son is with Ross and Lucy right now.

For a moment, the room was quiet. Then Lucy broke down in tears and reached out to Mrs. Coleman. “Thank you,” she cried. “Thank you for bringing him back.”

Mrs. Coleman gave the baby to the man, her eyes shining. “I’m just glad he’s going back to where he belongs,” she stated. “I can’t imagine how hard this must have been.”

It made me feel so much better when the babies were finally reunited with their parents. But I also knew that things could have gone very differently. It was a harsh reminder of how much our parents trust us. We needed to do better. That would not happen again, we had to make sure.

Ross and Lucy, on the other hand, held their twins close. Instead of being scared, they felt calm and thankful. “Thank you, Dr. Avery,” Ross said in a low voice. “I’m sorry for what I did before. I was scared.

I smiled at them and said, “I get it.” “You did the right thing by standing up for your son. I’m glad we were able to get him back to you.

But I couldn’t get rid of the feeling that this was a too-close call as I left the room. Also, I promised myself that from now on, we would do everything we could to treat every baby and parent with the utmost care and accuracy. Because one mistake can change everything.
