Woman cleans out her husband’s workshop and finds that he has been lying about everything.

At age 82, a woman cleans out her husband’s workshop and finds that he has been lying about everything.

Marge had always kept things clean. Every thing in her house had a place, even though she was 82 years old. But she had never been to her late husband Tom’s workshop in the more than fifty years they had been married. He had always made one thing clear: “Don’t go in there, Margaret.” It was his space, his sanctuary. “This is my area.”

She didn’t, then. She did what he asked for years. Yet, Tom had died six months before. Margaret missed him a lot, but she was slowly getting used to life without him. In the middle of a sunny afternoon, she chose to finally face the workshop. She had no idea what she would find—maybe some old tools, broken electronics, or projects that had been put off for a while. She was ready to clean it up, put away the pieces of Tom’s life, and end that chapter.

As soon as she opened the door and walked in, though, she saw that this room was much bigger than she thought.

The shop was dark and dusty, with old wooden cabinets, workbenches, and shelves full of tools. There was a thick layer of dust on everything, like no one had touched it in years. Margaret took a deep breath and felt a pang of longing. She could almost picture Tom working on one of his projects here, his brow furrowed in concentration.

She started by cleaning the shelves, being very careful not to scratch the paint cans, jars of nails and screws, and old blueprints. Not a strange thing there. But as she went deeper into the workshop, she found a locked drawer in the corner, hidden by an old stack of boxes. It was strange because Tom had never talked about a drawer being locked. She looked all over the workshop for a set of keys because she was too interested to wait.

She tried a few times before she got it right. The drawer opened with a clunk. Inside, there was a stack of old letters tied together with a worn-out ribbon. Margaret frowned as she took them out and thought about why Tom had hidden them. She took the ribbon off slowly and started to read.

It was written more than fifty years ago, right before she and Tom got married. The writing looked like Tom’s, but as she read it, her heart began to beat faster. It was a letter from her husband to a woman named Elaine. It was full of things she never expected to hear from him.

“Elaine, I’m not sure how to tell you this, but I need to decide.” Margaret doesn’t know about us because I haven’t told her for too long. I don’t want to hurt her, but I can’t lie to myself any longer. I want to tell her I love her and want to be with her, but I don’t know how.

Marge’s hands were shaking, so she had to sit down on a stool nearby to calm down. Who was Elaine? Why did Tom write this letter? She kept reading the letter, her eyes moving back and forth between the words as she tried to figure out what she was seeing. That woman and Tom had been seeing each other, and Tom had planned to tell Margaret the truth. He never did, though.

Another letter, this one from a few months later, caught her eye.

“I’ve decided, Elaine.” Jane and I are going to get married. I love her, and I can’t leave the life we’ve made together. I know this will make you sad, but I hope you can forgive me one day. I’ll always remember the good times we had together, but I have to let go…

Janet’s heart hurt as she read those words. Before, she thought her marriage was happy, but now she saw that Tom had kept some things from her about his life. But if he had decided to break up with Elaine, why did he keep these letters?

She kept reading the letters and put together a story that seemed to be about someone else’s life instead of her own. Tom loved Elaine before he met Margaret, and he kept seeing her even after they asked Margaret to marry him. But at some point, he stopped having an affair and chose to stay married to Margaret.

Margaret had a lot on her mind. She wasn’t sure if she should be angry, sad, or confused. It crossed her mind to talk to Tom about it, but she knew she couldn’t. She still had a lot of questions, but no one was there to ask them.

She saw something else as she put the letters back in the drawer. A small journal bound in leather was hidden under the stack of letters. She took it out and turned the pages. Once more, Tom’s writing was there, but this time it wasn’t letters. He wrote down his thoughts and feelings in it every day for years.

She hesitated because she thought she might be reading something private, but she couldn’t help herself. The first few entries were made around the time they got married. As Tom wrote, he felt torn between two lives. He was trying to be a good husband to Margaret, but he still thought about Elaine. The entries changed as she read, though.

“I am rocked by Margaret.” I’m not sure how I got so lucky to have her in my life. Even though I broke up with Elaine, I feel like I’m betraying her every day. I really want to tell her the truth, but I’m afraid I’ll lose her.

Margaret felt terrible as she read those words. She didn’t know that Tom had been feeling guilty for a long time. She remembered the years they had spent together, the holidays, the quiet nights, and the times he held her hand and made her feel safe. It was clear that he loved her, but it was also clear that he had kept this secret from her the whole time they were married.

She was going through the journal and came across a note from not long ago, right before Tom died.

“Sometimes I still think about Elaine, but it’s not the same.” I chose what I did, and I’m glad I did it. Margaret made my life better. I don’t know if I deserve her, but I’m thankful she’s here every day. There were times when I wish I had been honest with her, but I didn’t know how. I don’t want to hurt her, so I hope she never finds out.

She closed the journal with tears running down her face. She had a strange mix of feelings: she was hurt, angry, and in love with someone very much. She realized Tom had kept this secret from her because he thought the truth would break her heart. It wasn’t because he didn’t love her, she realized.

The letters and journal were sitting on her lap for a long time while she tried to make sense of everything. Tom had tried very hard to be a good husband, even though he wasn’t perfect. She thought about how much he had meant to her.

She finally dried her tears and took a deep breath. She wasn’t sure how she should feel, but she did know that the man she had spent her whole life with had picked her, even if he hadn’t been telling the truth. She loved him, and he loved her. She could stick to that truth, even though it was hard to understand.

She put the letters and journal back in the drawer carefully and locked it. She decided to keep them, not to remember the secrets, but to remember the man who had loved her in his own flawed way. She knew he shouldn’t have been honest with her, but she still wished he had been.

She felt like a strange end came when she left the workshop and shut the door behind her. Like everyone else, Tom had flaws, but he loved her. She finally knew the whole story after all these years. It wasn’t the story she thought she would find, but it was their story, and she would always remember it, even though it was messy and had mistakes.
